TVB welcomes CA revoking direction on mandatory broadcast of RTHK programmes
(4 March 2020) Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) noted the decision by the Communications Authority (CA), after consulting the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, to revoke with immediate effect its direction requiring TVB to carry RTHK programmes, particularly those broadcast on Jade Channel nightly at 6:00 to 6:30 pm on Monday to Friday. TVB has been applying to CA to repeal this requirement since 2016.
“RTHK has its own digital terrestrial and analogue TV channels for years, the coverage of which is not less than that of TVB. The mandatory requirement for us to carry RTHK programmes is outdated. It is a sheer duplication and depriving viewers of more choices,” a TVB spokesman said.
“We plan to make use of the time freed up by the new arrangement to extend the “News At 6:30” from 30 minutes to one hour in response to the demand for more news and information by the public, which is also reflected by the increasing ratings of TVB news.”
The new programme line-up will better serve viewers. Details will be announced as soon as possible.
